Question 668972: An example of my practice word problem for Algebra - I have worked it out and can not get the answer.
Susan has been saving money in a vacation fund. She has a jar filled with quarters and dollar coins. So far, she has saved $76.50. The number of quarters is 5 more than 3 times the amount of dollar coins she has saved. How many of each coin does she have?
D = Dollar
Q = 3D + 5
3d + d + 5 = 76.50
4d + 5 = 76.50
4d = 76.50 - 5
4d = 71.50/4
d = 17.875
AGH I can not get the answer- plase help! Thank you!!

Hi,
Number of Dollars: D
Number of quarters: 3D + 5
CENTS makes sense
100D + 25(3D + 5) = 7650¢
175D = 7650 - 125
175D = 7525
D = 43, the number of dollar coins. There are 134 quarters.
and..
