The only way to do this is to do it by trial and error (and making a table).

There are 15 ways to make $1.50 using only 16 coins and the 15 ways are:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 nickels + 10 dimes + 1 quarter = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

8 nickels + 6 dimes + 2 quarters = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

10 nickels + 5 dimes + 1 half dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

11 nickels + 2 dimes + 3 quarters = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

13 nickels + 1 dime + 1 quarter + 1 half dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

5 pennies + 1 nickel + 9 dimes + 1 half dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

5 pennies + 2 nickels + 6 dimes + 3 quarters = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

5 pennies + 4 nickels + 5 dimes + 1 quarter + 1 half dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

5 pennies + 5 nickels + 2 dimes + 4 quarters = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

5 pennies + 7 nickels + 1 dime + 2 quarters + 1 half dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

5 pennies + 9 nickels + 2 half dollars = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

10 pennies + 4 dimes + 2 half dollars = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

10 pennies + 1 nickel + 1 dime + 3 quarters + 1 half dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

10 pennies + 2 nickels + 3 dimes + 1 silver dollar = $1.50

-----------------------------------------

10 pennies + 3 nickels + 1 quarter + 2 half dollars = $1.50

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's it. Those 15 ways listed above are the only way to make $1.50 using 16 coins.

So if you only need to list 3 ways, then just select any 3 (from the 15 listed above).
