Question 653200: I am struggling with how to explain how to solve this problem:
A collection of coins consists of dimes and nickels. The number of dimes is two more than
the twice the number of nickels. The value of the collection is $2.70. How many dimes are
in the collection?
Here is what I have tried so far:
d=2n+2 (this is the relationship between the number of dimes and nickels.)
.10d + .05n= $2.70 (this is the value of the coins)
10d +05n= 270 (Here we multiply by 100 and clear the decimals.)
10d(2n+2)+05=270
The purpose of the assignment is to work the problem and explain how I did it. I am stuck!

Answer by vleith(2983)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You did fine up to that last step

Now use the first equation in the second one
You elininated d from the second eqaution and now have only n left

Now you know how many nickles you have, use the first equation to see how many dimes.

Does 22 dimes plus 10 nickles give you $2.70?
