let x = no. of 22 cent stamps
let y = no. of 14 cent
:
Write an equation for each statement.
:
"A man has 10 dallors to buy stamps."
.22x + .14y = 10.00
:
"He wants to buy twice as many 22 cent stamps as 14 cent stamps."
x = 2y
We want to find x, divide both sides by 2
y = .5x

Replace x with 2y in the 1st equation
.22x + .14(.5x) = 10.00
.22x + .07x = 10.00
.29x = 10.00
x = 10/.29
x = 34 ea 22 cent stamps is the most he can buy & still get at least 17 ea 14 cent stamps
