How many dimes and nickels are in the collection?

 5x + 10(x-8) = 400¢

    15x = 480

      x = 32, the number of Nickels.  There are 24 dimes

and 

 CHECKING our Answer***

32·5¢ + 24·10¢ = 400¢ or $4.00
