Question 590753: there is three more quaters than dimes but twice as many nickles as quaters the total is 3.75 how would you write this in an algebreic expression?

there are three unknowns (nickels, dimes, quarters), so you need three equations

5n + 10d + 25q = 375

q = d + 3 ___ q - 3 = d

n = 2q

you can solve the system by substituting ___ 5(2q) + 10(q - 3) + 25q = 375 ___ 10q + 10q - 30 + 25q = 375 ___ 45q = 405

solve for q, and then substitute back to find n and d
