Question 540672: Hi, I don't know how to do this word problem in my algebra class. We are supposed to use the HES(Heading, Equation, Solution)method. In my word problem we have three unknowns and have to use two equations. Can you help me. Here is the word problem:
Jamie has $3 in nickels, dimes, and quaters. If she has twice as many dimes as quaters and five more nickels than dimes, how many coins of each type does she have?

Let quarters be =q
Dimes = 2q
Nickels = 2q+5
$3 = 300 cents
25q+10*2q+5(2q+5)=300
25q+20q+10q+25=300
55q+25=300
55q+25-25=300-25
55q=275
q=275/55
q=5=> number of quarters
Dimes = 2*q= 10
Nickesls = 2q+5 = 15
