Question 51601: Hi,
I'm doing algebra homework and have come to a problem I can't figure out. I have to convert the below word problem into a math problem, and solve it.
I'm not just looking for the answer (I could go to the back of the book for that), I need to know every step of how to get to the answer.
I've tried several 'unconventional' ways of solving it... but nothings worked out.
The problem is:
"Lorraine has $7.70 in dimes and quarters in her car coin carrier for tolls. If the number of quarters is two more than twice the number of dimes, how many of each type does she have?"
Unfortunately, the text book I'm using is a used book, and the ISBN has been covered. However, you can find the textbook at: http://www.prenhall.com/setek/ it's called "Fundamentals of Mathematics"
Thanks,
~ Jasmine
Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
770=10x+25(2x+2) or 770=10x+50x+50 or 770=60x+50 or 720=60x or x=720/60 or
x=12 the number of dimes & 2*12+2=24+2=26 number of quarters
proof 10*12+25*26=770 or 120+650=770 or 770=770
