For $100, I can buy 4 chicken pies and 12 banana cakes, or 5 banana cakes and 10 chicken pies. How much does one of each kind cost?
----------------
Let c be the cost of chicken pies and b be the cost of banana cakes.
Then:
1st: 4c+12b=100
2nd: 10c+5b=100
Divide thru both equation to get:
3rd: 2c+6b=50
4th: 2c+b=20
Subtract 4th from 3rd to get:
5b=30
b=6
Substitute that back into 1st or 2nd to solve for c as follows:
4c+12(6)=100
4c=28
c=7
Solution: Cost of a banana cake is $6
Cost of a chicken pie is $7
