Answer by sofiyac(983)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x be the number of pennies and y be the number of nickels
0.01x+0.05y=17
x+y=1140
solve the system
y=1140-x
0.01x+0.05(1140-x)=17
0.01x+57-0.05x=17
0.01x+57-0.05x=17
-0.04x=-40
x=1000
y=1140-1000
y=140
so we have 1000 pennies and 140 nickels
