A man has two more nickels than dimes. He has $1.15 in all. How many coins of each kind does he have? Which equation can be used to solve the problem?
-------------------
Equations:
Quantity Eq: n = d+2
Value Eq: 5n + 10d = 115 cents
----
Substitute for "n" and solve for "d":
---
5(d+2) + 10d = 115
5d + 10 + 10d = 115
----
15d = 105
--
d = 7 (# of dimes)
---
Solve for "n":
n = d+2
n = 7+2 = 9 (# of nickels)
