Let x be the number of dimes.
Let 3x be the number of nickels.
...
10x+5(3x)=2500 ... the dimes are worth 10 cents and the nickels are worth 5 cents.
10x+15x=2500
25x=2500
x=2500/25
x=100
3x=300
...
Therefore, there are 100 dimes and 300 nickels.
