Question 43161: Can someone help me to work this backwards?
Helen paid 25 cents for a bag of jelly beans. After giving her brother half the beans, Helen ate 13. Her sister then ate one more than half the remaining beans, after which there were 3 left. How many jelly beans were in the bag before it was opened?

She ended with three.
Her sister had eight. She ate one more than half, which would be five, leaving three.
Helen ate 13. 13 plus 8 are 21. That means she gave her brother 21 beans.
The bag originally had 42 jellybeans.
