You have 10 conis that total 85 cents.Some are Dimes and Some are Nickels. How many of each coin do you have?
---
Equations:
n + d = 10 coins
5n+10d = 85 cents
----------
Multiply thru the 1st equation by 5:
5n + 5d = 50
5n + 10d = 85
------
Subtract and solve for "d":
5d = 35
d = 7 (# of dimes)
-----
Solve for "n":
n+d = 10
n + 7 = 10
n = 3 (# of nickels)
