let x=number of nickels in the jar
then, 48-x=number of quarters in the jar
.05x+.25(48-x)=10.60
.05+12-.25x=10.6
-.20x=-1.4
x=7
48-x=41
ans: there are 7 nickels and 41 quarters in the jar.
