Let x represent the number of dimes- dimes: x
Then, quarters: 65 – x
dimes + quarters = $10.85
Dimes are worth 0.10 and quarters are worth 0.25.
Therefore, multiply x by 0.10 and (65-x) by 0.25 to
find out how much you have.
0.10x + 0.25(65 – x) = 10.85
Combine like terms and solve for x.
0.10x + 16.25 - 0.25x = 10.85
-0.15x + 16.25 = 10.85
-0.15x + 16.25 – 16.25 = 10.85 – 16.25
-0.15x = -5.40
x = 36
dimes: x
quarters: 65 – x
There are 36 dimes and 65 – 36= 29 quarters!
