Hi,
Let x represent the number of pennies, then 2x represents the number of dimes
x + 10*2x = 231 cents
solve for x
21x = 231
x = 11 the number of pennies
2*11 = 22 the number of dimes
checking our answer
11 cents + 220 cents = 231 cents = $2.31
