thinking n would be the nickels & 2n would be the dimes... but that really doesn't make much sense.

You have not been able to solve it because this problem is actually a system of linear equations in two variables.
Let n = nickels
Let d = dimes
n + d = 14
0.05n + 0.10d = 0.90
Use the substitution method to find your answer.
