Sue has nickels and quarters totaling $6.50. There are 4 more nickels than quarters. How many coins are there?
.
Let x = number of quarters
then
x+4 = number of nickels
.
.25x + .05(x+4) = 6.50
.25x + .05x+.20 = 6.50
.30x + .20 = 6.50
.30x = 6.30
x = 21 (quarters)
.
number of nickels:
x+4 = 21+4 = 25
.
Total number of coins:
21+25 = 46
