How many nickels and how many dimes are there?
:
.05n + .10d = 11.00
:
"There are 40% less dimes than nickels." means
d = .6n
:
Substitute .6n for d
:
.05n + .10(.6n) = 11.00
.05n + .06n = 11
.11n = 11
n = 100 nickels
:
d = .6(100)
d = 60 dimes
:
Check
.05(100) + .10(60) =
5 + 6 = 11
