Let the $2 coins be x, the 50 cent coins will be 17-x
$2-------------------------$0.5----------------- total
x--------------------------17-x------------------17 coins
2*x------------------------0.5(17-x)-------------22 dollars ( Value)

2x+0.5(17-x)=22
2x+8.5-0.5x=22
1.5x=22-8.5
1.5x=13.5
x=13.5/1.5
x=9 = $2 coins
17-9=8 the number of 50 cent coins
