Question 27112: In Paul's bank, there is $2.60 in pennies, nickels, and dimes. In all there are 45 coins. If there are twice as many nickels as pennies, find how many of each kind there are.

Answer by Paul(988)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the pennies be x
Let the nickels be 2x
Let the dimes be y

so:
x+2x+y=45 comin total solve for y
y=45-3x (subsitution)

Nickels value = 5
Dime value = 10
Pennie value = 1
Total value = 260

5(2x)+10(y)+x=260 (subsitute for y)
10x+10(45-3x)+x=260
10x+450-30x+x=260
-19x=-190
x=10

2(10)=20
y=45-3(10)
y=45-30
y=15

Hence, there were 10 pennies, 20 nickels and 15 dimes.
