Question 270832: On your desk there are 20 coins, some quarters some dimes, Their value totals $3.05. How many of each coin are there?
This problem is so unlike the others on my sheet. On the other problems I was always able to start out with 2 equations, but I can't understand where to begin with this one. Could you help me out?

Not being American, can I check that a quarter is 25 of your cents and a dime is 10 of your cents
Assuming this is true.
Let us say there are x quarters and therefore (and this is the important bit)
20 - x dimes
The value is thus 25x + 10(20 - x) = 305
25x + 200 - 10x = 305
15x = 105
x = 7 quarters and therefore 13 dimes
This would be $1.75 in quarters and $1.30 in dimes
