Let n = the number of nickels
d = the number of dimes
Eqn 1: n + d = 16
Eqn 2: 0.05*n + 0.10*d = 1.05
Step 1: Isolate for d in Eqn. 1:
d = 16-n
Step 2: Substitute this value of d into Eqn 2:
0.05*n + 0.10*(16-n) = 1.05
0.05n + 1.6 - 0.10n = 1.05
-0.05n = -0.55
Divide both sides by -0.05:
n = -0.55/-0.05
n = 11
There are 11 nickels and 5 dimes.
