Let y be the number of .17 stamps.
x=2y+3
.12x+.17y=15.53 replace x with (2y+3) & solve for y.
.12(2y+3)+.17y=15.53
.24y+.36+.17y=15.53
.41y=15.53-.36
.41y=15.17
y=15.17/.41
y=37 ans. for the number of .17 stamps.
x=2*37+3
x=74+3=77 ans. for the number of .12 stamps.
