The oak street theater sells adult tickets for $7.50 each, and childrens tickets for $2.00 each. On a certain day, they sold 75 tickets, and made a total of $408.50. How many of each type of ticket did they sell? If you can help me get started with the equation and how to set it up I can figure it out. Thank you,

The oak street theater sells adult tickets for $7.50 each, and childrens tickets for $2.00 each. On a certain day, they sold 75 tickets, and made a total of $408.50. How many of each type of ticket did they sell?
-------------
Quantity Equation: a + c = 75
Value Equation: 7.5a+2c = 408.50
---------------------------
Multiply thru the Quantity Eq by 2 to set it up for elimination:
2a + 2c = 150
---
Subtract that from the Value Equation:
5.5a = 258.5
a = 47 (# of adults)
c = 75-47 = 28 (# of children)

Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x = number of children's tickets
Since there were 75 tickets total, the number of adult tickets is the total 75 minus the number of children's tickets x:
75-x = number of adult tickets.
The total value of the tickets equals the sum of the value of each ticket sold times the number of each ticket:
2*x+7.50*(75-x) = 408.50
See if that works! If not, send me an Email or re-post the problem!!
