Question 190635: i need help solving this problem.... please and thank you... jim runs a food cart and during a busy out door festival he sold $7343.75 worth of food. he sells hot dogs for $2.95 and steak sandwiches for $9.95. if he sold a total of 985 items that day,how many of each item did he sell?

Let x be the number of hot dogs. Then 985 - x must be the number of steak sandwiches.

The amount of money made from the hot dogs must be 2.95x and the amount of money made from the steak sandwiches is 9.95(985 - x) and these two amounts must sum to 7434.75, so:

Solve for x to get the number of hot dogs. Subtract that from 985 to get the number of steak sandwiches.
