:lets call the number of pennies and nickels ,p and n respectively

.01p+.05n=2.58.........eq 1
p=2n-36................eq 2
:
take p's value of 2n-36 in eq 2 and plug it into eq 1
:
.01(2n-36)+.05n=2.58

.02n-.36+.05n=2.58
:
.07n=2.94
