Let's call the number of quarters q. Then if he has three times as many nickels as quarters, he has 3q nickels. So, if he has 52 coins all together, we can write
q%2B3q=52
4q=52
q=13
So Stan has 13 quarters. How many nickels does he have? He has 3q=3(13)=39 nickels. The question is how much money does have. If he has 13 quarters and 39 nickels, he has
13(0.25)+39(0.05)=3.25+1.95=$5.20
