N = # of nickels
D = # of dimes
D = N + 5 (he has 5 more dimes than nickels)
5N + 10D = 170 (they add to $1.70)

Now there are 2 eqns in 2 unknowns. My dog can solve those. (OK, he only did one, and it might have been luck.)
Sub for D in the 2nd eqn
5N + 10*(N+5) = 170
5N + 10N + 50 = 170
15N = 120
N = 8
D = N+5 = 13
