Question 133544: Lewis and Julie have the same number of coins. Lewis has only dimes and Julie has only quarters. If Julie has $1.80 more than Lewis does, how many coins does each one have?
Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=number of coins that Lewis has
And x=number of coins that Julie has also
Value of Lewis's coins =$0.10x
Value of Julie's coins =$0.25x
Now we are told that:
$0.25x=$0.10x+$1.80 subtract $.0.10x from each side
$0.25x-$0.10x=$1.80 collect like terms
$0.15x=$1.80 divide both sides by $0.15
x=12-------------- number of coins that each have
CK
12*$0.25=12*$0.10+$1.80
$3.00=$1.20+$1.80
$3.00=$3.00
Hope this helps---ptaylor
