The answer is 10,000 pennies (or $100.00) I think but I cannot put it into a formula to show it... I can just see the pattern after a few days -- the number of pennies works out to be the number of days squared. I'm looking for how to write the problem (beyond seeing the pattern).

this is an arithmetic sequence, the differenc between two consecutive terms is constant (2 in this case)
the sum of the sequence is ((first term)+(last term))(number of terms)/2
sum=(1+199)(100)/2
