y = number of nickels
x + y = 45
.1x + .05y = 3.25
those are your two equations that need to be solved simultaneously.
multiply both sides of the first equation by .1 and leave the second equation as is to get:
.1x + .1y = 4.50
.1x + .05y = 3.25
subtract the second equation from the first to get:
.05y = 1.25
solve for y to get:
y = 25
this makes x = 20 because x + y = 45

20 dimes and 25 nickels.
the total value is 20 * .10 + 25 * .05 = 2.00 + 1.25 = 3.25.
