as nickels. How many of the coins are dimes?

For a moment, add mentally three dimes to the collection.


Then you will have $3.50 in total.


And you can group then the coins in sets, containing 2 dimes and 1 nickel in each group.


Each such a group is worth  2*10+5 = 25 cents;  so the number of groups is   = 14.


    From this point, there is only one step to the 


ANSWER.  14 nickels and 2*14 - 3 = 25 dimes.


CHECK.  14*5 + 10*25 = 320 cents = $3.20.   ! Correct !
