Answer by josgarithmetic(39620)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
dimes minus nickels is 8;
dimes is nickels plus 8;
n nickels
n+8 dimes

Simplify and solve for n.

.

Take off these extra 8 dimes for a minute.

Then you will have 230-80 = 150 cents in equal number dimes and nickels.

You can group the coins in sets, each containing 1 dime and one nickel.

Each group is worth 10+5 = 15 cents; so, there are = 10 such groups.

It leads you to the answer: the original collection has 10 nickels and 10+8 = 18 dimes.

Solved (mentally).
