.

N nickels and (16-N) dimes.

The money equation for the total

    5*N + 10*(16-N) = 120   cents

Simplifying

    5N + 160 - 10N = 120

    -5N + 160 = 120

    160 - 120 = 5N

      40      = 5N

      N       = 40/5 = 8.

ANSWER. 8 nickels and the rest 16-8 = 8 coins are dimes.

CHECK.   8*5 + 8*10 = 40 + 80 = 120 cents.   ! Precisely correct !
