Ii I had two 5 centavos (nickels) less, I would have 5 times as many 5 centavo (nickels) as 10 centavos (dimes). How many coins of each kind does he have?

n = number of nickels
d = number of dimes

1.45/0.05 = 29
n = d/2 + 29

n - 2 = 5d ---> n = 5d + 2

Set the equations equal to each other.

d/2 + 29 = 5d + 2
27 = 9d/2
d = 6

Ben has 6 10-centavo coins and 32 5-centavo coins.
