Answer by ikleyn(52873)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
10d + 25q = 850   cents     (1)
  d -    q = 15             (2)

Multiply eq(2) by 10 (bpth sides). Keep eq(1) as is:

10d + 25q = 850   cents     (1')
10d - 10q = 150             (2')
-------------------------------------Now subtract eq(2') from eq(1'). You will get

    35q = 850-150 = 700  ====>  q =  = 20.

Answer.  2o quarters and 20+15 = 35 dimes.

Check. Check it on your own.
