Let x be the number of nickels
According to the problem,
27(0.1)+x(0.05)=1.8
0.05x=-0.9
=> x=-18

How can you divide $1.80 into 27 dimes and nickels?

n + d = 27
5n + 10d = 180 Divide by 5 --> n + 2d = 36
==============
n + 2d = 36
n + d = 27
------------------- Subtract
d = 9
n = 18
