Let n and d be the numbers of nickels and dimes, respectively. Then
(1) the total number of coins is 36
(2) the total value of the coins -- 5 cents per nickel and 10 cents per dime -- is 220 cents

"solving using elimination and multiplication"

multiply equation (1) times 5
use (2) and the new equation to eliminate n
