d = 2n - 5          (1)     (counting coins)
5n + 10d = 400      (2)     (counting cents)


Substitute (1) into (2). You will get

5n + 10*(2n-5) = 400,

5n + 20n - 50 = 400  ====>  25n = 400 + 50 = 450  ====>  n =  = 18.


Answer.  18 nickels and 2*18-5 = 31 dime.


Check.   18*5 + 31*10 = 400.     ! Correct !
