Then solve:
10x + 25(x-12) = 1100
10x +25x -300 = 1100
35x = 1400

Then to solve for quarters, you must plug in the amount for X that you got in the first problem:
X - 12 =
40 - 12 = 28; therefore, he had 28 quarters totaling $7.00
