suppose you have $6 in nickles, dimes, and quarters. if you have twice as many nickels as quarters and the total value of your dimes
is the same as the total value of your quarters, how many coins do you have in total
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let "x" be the number of quarters.
Then the number of nickels is 2x, and the number of dimes is 2.5x.
So, you have 5*(2x)           cents in nickels,
             2.5*10*x = 25x   cents in dimes, and
             25*x             cents in quarters.
In all, you have 10x + 25x + 25x = 60x cents in coins.
According to the condition, it is $6 = 600 cents. So, your equation is
60x = 600,  or  x =  = 10.
You have 10 quarters, 25 dimes and 20 nickels.
Check. 10*25 + 25*10 + 20*5 = 600 cents = $6.00
Answer. 10 + 25 + 20 = 55 coins, in all.
