:
y = no. of quarters
"three less quarters than dime"; therefore
(y + 3) = no. of dimes
:
.10(y+3) + .25y = 2.75 is the equation
solve
.10y + .30 + .25y = 2.75
.10y + .25y = 2.75 - .30
.35y = 2.45
y = 2.45/.35
y = 7 quarters
then we know y + 3 = no. of dimes, therfore
7 + 3 = 10 dimes
