Make nickels = x
quarters = y
x + y = 165............(1)
5x + 25y = 1325.......(2)
Multiply (1) by 5
5x + 5y = 825 ..........(1)
5x + 25y = 1325........(2)
Subtract (1) from (2)
....20y = 500
......y = 500/20
......y = 25
Substitute y = 25 into (1)
x + y = 165 .....(1)
x + 25 = 165
x = 165 - 25
x = 140.
Jane has 140 nickels and 25 quarters
