Let the number of quarters and dimes be q and d. The we can write
q + d = 12 and the value equation is
25q + 10d = 255 (we work in cents)
Now subtract off 10 times the first equation and we get
25q + 10d = 255
-(10q + 10d = 120)
---------------------
15q = 135
q = 9 quarters which means there are
d = 3 dimes
