Question 1003012: Mashu has 28 coins all of which are either dimes or nickels The coins are worth a total of $2.60. Find how many dimes and how many nickels he has.

Answer by CubeyThePenguin(3113)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
n = number of nickels
d = number of dimes

n + d = 28
5n + 10d = 260

Multiply the first equation by 10. We are going to eliminate the variable d.

10n + 10d = 280
5n + 10d = 260

Subtracting, we get 5n = 20, so n = 4.

Mashu has 4 nickels and 24 dimes.
