k = katie's money

you get:

1/3 * e = 2/5 * k

you know that k = 24.5

you get:

1/3 * e = 2/5 * 24.5

solve for e to get:

e = 6/5 * 24.5

the sum of their money is e + k

since k = 24.5 and e = 6/5 * 24.5, then the sum of their money is 6/5 * 24.5 + 24.5

simplify to get the sum of their money is 29.4 + 24.5

simplify further to get the sum of their money is 53.9

emily has 29.4
katy has 24.5

you are given that:

1/3 * 29.4 = 2/5 * 24.5

simplify to get:

9.8 = 9,8

all requirements of the problem are satisfied.

the solution is that the two sisters have $53.90 together.
