Question 8074:
When Susan and David applied for their marriage license, the first thing they were asked was their ages. With a reluctance to reveal something so important, Susan said that they were both in their twenties. The clerk, however, insisted on more specific information so, David added that they both had the same birthday, and that he was four times as old as Susan was when he was three times as old as Susan was when he was twice as old as Susan was. At this point, the clerk fainted, whereupon the couple snatched up the license, hurried off to the preacher’s, and lived happily ever after. When the clerk came to and realized that he would have to complete his records some way or other he began to do a little figuring, and before long had found out how old the two were.

Question 16343: I have a really hard time on getting the formula on word problems. I read them, understand what they are asking, I even get the answer but cannot seem to translate the words on to the paper in a form of a equation.
The problem I am having trouble on is:
"Batman is 20 years older then robin. In 4 years, Batman will be twice Robin age. How old are they now?"
I get..
Robin=x
Batman=20+x(Batman older by 20 years )
Batman=2(20+x)( Batman where he is twice as Robin)
The answer I get is that Batman is 36 right now, and Robin is 16, because in 4 years Batman is going to be 40, and Robin 20, Batman is TWICE Robin's age. 20x2=40...
Please help me in getting Enlgish translated into Algebra equation.

Question 18658: Aaron is twice as old as Jack. The sum of their ages three years ago was 45 years. How old are they now?
My problem is when I get the solution, the ages are backwards.
Now Aaron = 2 Now Jack
(Now Aaron - 3) + (Now Jack -3) = 45
Now Aaron + Now Jack = 51
Now Jack = 51 - Now Aaron
Substitute-
Now Aaron = 2(51 - Now Aaron)
Now Aaron = 51 - 2 now Aaron
3 Now Aaron = 51
Aaron = 17
Jack = 34
But Aaron is supposed to be twice Jacks age not half it.
