Hi there,
Jack is 6 years older than Betty.
J = 6 + B.........Equation 1
In 3 years time Jack will be
twice as old as Betty.
J + 3 = 2(B + 3)......Equation 2
Replace the J in Equation 2 with
6 + B from equation 1
6 + B + 3 = 2(B + 3)
9 + B = 2B + 6
Collect like terms:
B - 2B = 6 - 9
-B = - 3
B = 3
Betty is currently 3 years old.
Jack is currently 9 years old.
